Undergraduate Physiology Degree Programs in the United States: from Famine to Feast.
نویسنده
چکیده
The formal teaching of physiology and physiology-related subjects at the undergraduate level in colleges and university in the U.S. is critical for the long-term success of this important area of science. This educational endeavor is a fundamental requirement for the continued movement of students through the “physiology pipeline,” ultimately producing the next generation of physiologists prepared to perform research, teaching, and service in this field (1). Moreover, the teaching of physiology at the undergraduate level makes important contributions to the preparation of students for post-baccalaureate training in a variety of health professions. The overarching goals of this editorial are to provide a perspective of the history and status of undergraduate programs in the U.S. that award a bachelors of science (BS) degree in physiology, to briefly touch on the aspirations of students who choose to pursue a degree in physiology, and to outline the challenges that face existing and future undergraduate physiology degree programs in this country.

Fast “Feast/Famine” Cycles for Studying Microbial Physiology Under Dynamic Conditions: A Case Study with Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Microorganisms are constantly exposed to rapidly changing conditions, under natural as well as industrial production scale environments, especially due to large-scale substrate mixing limitations. In this work, we present an experimental approach based on a dynamic feast/famine regime (400 s) that leads to repetitive cycles with moderate changes in substrate availability in an aerobic glucose c...

Introduction: Accreditation is one of the most important tools to improve the quality of education in nursing. This study has made a comparative comparison of the accreditation model of the Bachelor of Nursing training program in Iran, Canada and the United States. Methods: A descriptive and comparative study was conducted in 2021. keywords like "accreditation", "undergraduate nursing", "educa...
متن کاملPhysiology undergraduate degree requirements in the U.S.
Course-level learning objectives and core concepts for undergraduate physiology teaching exist. The next step is to consider how these resources fit into generalizable program-level guidelines for Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in Physiology. In the absence of program-level guidelines for Physiology degree programs, we compiled a selective internal report to review degree requirements from 18...
متن کاملCorticosterone levels predict survival probabilities of Galapagos marine iguanas during El Nino events.
Plasma levels of corticosterone are often used as a measure of "stress" in wild animal populations. However, we lack conclusive evidence that different stress levels reflect different survival probabilities between populations. Galápagos marine iguanas offer an ideal test case because island populations are affected differently by recurring El Niño famine events, and population-level survival c...
متن کاملGuanosine 3',5'-bispyrophosphate coordinates global gene expression during glucose-lactose diauxie in Escherichia coli.
Guanosine 3',5'-bispyrophosphate (ppGpp), also known as "magic spot," has been shown to bind prokaryotic RNA polymerase to down-regulate ribosome production and increase transcription of amino acid biosynthesis genes during the stringent response to amino acid starvation. Because many environmental growth perturbations cause ppGpp to accumulate, we hypothesize ppGpp to have an overarching role ...
